CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Casey's breath caught in her throat as the beam of her flashlight fell upon the gruesome sight before her. The dark tunnel yawned like an open mouth, and within it lay scattered remains of human life, pale and twisted. She felt a shudder run down her spine, leaving her with a cold dread that weighed heavily on her chest.

"Holy hell," Nathan whispered, his eyes wide with horror. He moved closer to Casey, his rugged features a mask of shock. "Casey, there must be... what, at least a dozen bodies?"

"Maybe more," she replied, her voice barely audible. Her heart pounded relentlessly against her ribcage, urging her to retreat from this gruesome discovery. As much as her analytical mind craved answers, her instincts screamed for her to leave this place immediately; if they weren't careful, they'd unwittingly disturb evidence.

"Back up," Nathan said firmly, taking hold of Casey's arm and guiding her away from the scene. They stepped cautiously, careful not to trample anything that might unlock the secrets surrounding the bodies.

"Hey, it's Nathan," he said into his phone once they were a safe distance away. "We need backup now. We've discovered multiple bodies in a tunnel near our location."

"Send them fast," Casey added, her mind racing as she tried to comprehend the situation. Who could have done this? And why?

"Understood, hang tight," came the response over the line.

As they waited, Casey's thoughts churned wildly. How long had these bodies been here? She couldn't help but feel that the answer to that question would prove vital in solving this mystery. Nathan, ever the protective partner, kept a watchful eye on their surroundings.

"Alright, we're at" – Nathan squinted at his phone's screen, swiping to the GPS coordinates – "Sending coordinates now. It's a thick forest area, southwest of the initial crime scene."

"Copy that," the voice on the other end of the line confirmed. "Stay put; backup is en route."

"Roger that," Nathan replied and ended the call. He pocketed his phone and glanced over at Casey, who stood rooted at the entrance of the cavern. Her eyes were wide with trepidation as she peered into the abyss, as if she could discern further secrets by taking in every shadow and shape.

"Casey," Nathan called quietly, not wanting to startle her. She turned towards him, her face pale but determined. "Backup's coming."

"Of course," she murmured, forcing herself to nod. But something about this place set her on edge, more than any other crime scene they'd encountered before. The darkness seemed to breathe, whispering of unspeakable horrors that had escaped the world's notice until now.

"Let's move back a bit," Nathan suggested, his hand lightly touching her arm in reassurance. They retreated several yards from the cavern's entrance, giving the encroaching shadows a wider berth. Casey fought the urge to shiver, knowing that she needed to remain focused.

She glanced at the muddy ground, listening to the wind chimes in the trees above them.

Silence settled around them, punctuated only by the distant rustling of leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl.
